Baseball: Weekend Betting Preview
Posted on May 21, 2009 | 11:58 AM ET Filed under:The first round of interleague play hits the baseball betting slate this weekend. In the Bronx, the defending league champion Philadelphia Phillies visit the new Stadium for three games with the streaking New York Yankees. And up in Beantown, the Boston Red Sox play host to the New York Mets for a three-game set.
Going into a Thursday afternoon rubber match in Cincinnati, the Phillies sat atop the National League's East Division, a game ahead of the second-place Mets. Philly had a five-game winning streak snapped by a 5-1 loss to the Reds on Wednesday.
The Yanks, meanwhile, going into a series finale vs. Baltimore on Thursday, have won eight straight games after beating the Orioles 11-4 on Wednesday. New York now sits in third place in the AL East, just 2.5 games back of the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
Philly is scheduled to throw Brett Myers at the Yankees in the series opener Friday, J.A. Happ Saturday (4pm Eastern, Fox), and Cole Hamels Sunday, while New York will counter with A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte, and CC Sabathia.
Through Wednesday's action, Philadelphia is 13-5 on the road this season, while the Yanks are 12-7 at their new digs.
The totals are a combined 43-28 in Phillies and Yankees games this season. And the O/Us are 12-5-2 at the new Yankee Stadium, where games are averaging a healthy 12 runs per.
The Mets thought they were on a roll recently, winning 11 of 13 games, but after losing to the Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday they had lost four in a row, scoring just six runs in the process. So going into Thursday's play, New York, as mentioned above, trailed Philadelphia by one game in the NL East.
Boston, meanwhile, after taking the first two games of its current three-game set with Toronto, is only 3-4 over the last week, and trails the first-place Jays by a game and a half in the AL East.
The Mets will send Johan Santana to the hill Friday, Mike Pelfrey Saturday, and Tim Redding Sunday, while the Sox will go with Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, and Tim Wakefield.
Thanks to its recent four-game slide, New York is only 9-11 on the road this year, while Boston is a solid 15-4 at Fenway.
As of Thursday morning, Philly was getting +150 at Oddsmaker.com to win the NL East, +800 to win the pennant, and +2,500 to win the World Series again. The Yankees are listed at +200 to win the AL East at Oddsmaker.com, +300 to win the AL pennant, and +800 to win the Series.
